BIOGRAPHY

Following a five year City & Guilds apprenticeship in panel beating where I learnt the skills of metalwork, set me on the trajectory to be the sculptor I am today.

It’s very important for me to start with reality and to let it reach its own conclusion… My art is a contemporary reflection, a nod to my personal inspirational artists; Chadwick, Armitage, Moore… When I start to work, I wait till I feel what I want to do and I know how I am working by the presence or lack of rhythmic impulse. I think that to attempt to analyse the ability to draw ideas from one’s subconscious source would almost certainly interfere with that ability.

The use of anthracite carved and molded into a human form, the bends and folds that I am able to put into iron, steel, copper, brass, bronze and aluminum to create a more angular structure; the curves using an English wheel and anvil to produce more flowing, fluid, free forms; skills that have taken many years to perfect and master.

This motion of movement transitions into some of the more abstract concepts. Construction in these metals hold endless possibilities for me to make my visions become a reality.

Years of understanding how metal works, transforming from a flat, inert, sheet into something quite beautiful is my breath, I live it, I feel it, I’m driven by it.

New works continuously evolve and excite with unlimited passion leading to the heterogeneity of the sculptures produced. The pieces are desired to create visual stimuli to the spectator, forging questions to be raised as to how metal can be moved in these most profound and complex forms.
Working on life size sculptures is of particular interest to me.

I wish to inspire the beholder to reach out and explore, both visually and by touch…

BACKGROUND

A burgeoning love of art and the beauty of unique handmade objects led me to study the modernist arts and design movement of the 20th century. The Bauhaus movement and great artists emerging from St. Ives, Cornwall, in early and mid 20th century became my passion, so much so I opened my first gallery dealing in great art and sculpture of this period. Over the years to come, I continued to open larger and more extensive galleries. During the same time, I was an occasional advisory for the BBC and featured in major publications such as 'Period Living', national & local newspapers showing art and interior design.

The following twenty years, I spent dealing in fine art and worked on various artworks for clients creating interior sculptural pieces. This motivated and encouraged me to express my own creativity. The collective knowledge I have of metalwork, art and design have formed a long-standing appreciation for producing modernist forms.

I am now acknowledged worldwide with private commissions and sales of studio projects.
